Dr. Manzie has completed subspeciality training that allows him to perform the removal of simple and complex tumours (cancer or non-cancerous) from the head and neck region. As a member of the head and neck multidisciplinary team, he has access to world-class facilities and a world-leading team of colleagues.
Oral Cavity (Mouth) Cancer Surgery
Large oral cancers are typically reconstructed with a free flap from the forearm (radial or ulnar artery forearm flap), upper arm (lateral arm flap), groin or upper leg (anterolateral thigh flap). Patients undergoing surgery for a tongue cancer often require a tracheostomy.
The effect on a patients speech or swallow after surgery will depend on a number of factors (including your function before surgery, the size of the tumour and the thickness of the reconstruction).
